Good news, fans of rad lady detectives! Elisabeth Moss is set to reprise her role as Detective Robin Griffin in Season 2 of Top of the Lake for SundanceTV and BBC Two, and will be joined this time around by Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ Gwendoline Christie. Season 1 director Jane Campion will also return as co-director and co-writer.

In a statement, Christie explained,

I am so delighted to be working on Top of the Lake 2. Jane Campion has been a major creative influence throughout my life and I could not feel more privileged to be working on the next installment of her unique and enthralling drama, alongside the brilliant Elisabeth Moss.

Elisabeth Moss said of reprising her role, “I’m so excited to be back in Australia working with Jane on exploring this wonderful character. I can’t wait for audiences to see where we take Robin’s journey!

In the first season of the New Zealand-set drama (now available on Netflix!), Detective Robin Griffith returns to her childhood home to care for her ailing mother and becomes obsessed with investigating the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl. She battles the boy’s club of the local police department, the girl’s profoundly dysfunctional family, and, of course, her own requisite personal demons. Variety reports that Season 2 will “find Moss’ character investigating a new murder four years after the events of the original.”

Although I sometimes found Top of the Lake difficult to watch (the series is overall very respectful in how it depicts violence against women, but it’s still heartbreaking to realize what some of the characters have endured at the hands of the men in their lives), I’m thrilled to get more details on the second season.

Elizabeth Moss has already won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Detective Robin Griffith, and it’s not hard to see why; she’s incredibly compelling in the role. It’s a testament to Top of the Lake‘s awesome creators that Detective Griffith is a woman you want to root for, but she’s also allowed to be just as mean, fucked up, and all-around complicated as TV’s male detectives are. If it’s not obvious, I’m a big fan of the show, and Christie’s involvement just has me even more hype.

Thoughts, gang? Did any of you watch Top of the Lake Season 1?
