Bryce Dallas Howard Explains How Claire’s New Shoes in Jurassic World 2 Illustrate Her Character Arc

Recommended Videos

Bryce Dallas Howard can’t reveal any major plot points about Jurrasic World 2, although she does know a handful of hints. The only clue she can reveal? The fate of her high heels, and their significance. We already knew she wouldn’t be wearing heels again, but it turns out there’s a narrative justification for that, at least according to Howard:

[The heels] were fine. That was part of Jurassic World. They served their purpose. Actually, to answer that question seriously, Claire is a different person now. You now, the person she is at the end of the movie is not the person she was in the beginning. Her armor of sorts was that white, pristine outfit with heels in a very corporate environment and stuff, and the chick at the end… totally different. So yeah… it better not be heels.

Howard has probably heard this question a lot — the E! reporter is the one who brings up the topic in the video above — so I’m not surprised so see that she’s come up with an eloquent, character-based explanation for why the shoes (and the lack of the shoes) matter so much.

As fluffy and ephemeral as this topic may seem, costume design does matter in how Claire gets perceived by the audience — and those perceptions also reveal a lot about how society feels about women in heels. It’s clear that we all have some mixed feelings about them, hm? It’ll be interesting to see what the costume designers give Claire to wear for her next narrative arc.
