Nothing Is Safe: Memento to Get a Remake

I hope they get real Brad Pitt this time, at least.

So now is the part where our lives play out in reverse order, and everything meets at the moment Memento was released, and it turns out there’s not actuallyMemento remake in the works, right? Just the same movie twice? That’d make way more sense, frankly.

But, no. The 2000 indie thriller that put Christopher Nolan on the map about a man with an anterograde amnesia–leaving him unable to form new memories–is getting the reboot treatment. I admittedly haven’t watched Memento since shortly after its release, but I don’t remember there being anything about the movie that would be greatly improved by the cinematic technology of 2015. Oh, unless we’re talking money-making technology, because while popular and widely praised, that small-budget movie only made $39.7 million.

That’s money left on the table as far as AMBI Pictures is concerned, as they’ve acquired the rights to Exclusive Media Group’s library and Memento with it, and they’re excited about the po$$ibilities of the reboot. Monika Bacardi of AMBI said in a statement,

Memento is a masterpiece that leaves audiences guessing not just throughout the film, but long after as well, which is a testament to its daring approach. We intend to stay true to Christopher Nolan’s vision and deliver a memorable movie that is every bit as edgy, iconic and award-worthy as the original. It’s a big responsibility to deliver something that lives up to the mastery of the original, but we are extremely excited and motivated to bring this puzzle back to life and back into the minds of moviegoers.

CBR reports that the production house’s film rights library now also includes Cruel Intentions, Donnie Darko, and Sliding Doors, so it’s probably safe to say we’ve got those remakes to look forward to.
