Netflix warned only a few months ago that prices would have to rise to support its ever-growing content, and now it has begun. They’re raising the price of the standard streaming package from $8.99 to $9.99.
Current subscribers will be locked into the $8.99 rate for 12 months—unless they’ve been guaranteed even longer than that by a special promotion—but after that, the cost will go up the extra dollar. New subscribers will, of course, be expected to pay the (slightly) higher rate from the get-go. However, this does not affect customers on the “basic” plan, which goes for $7.99 and only offers one stream and no HD, and—wait, does anyone even have that plan? Does it exist? Why? Can anyone verify?
… Anyway. In an email statement, Netflix explained the price hike only by saying, “To continue adding more TV shows and movies including many Netflix original titles, we are modestly raising the price for some new members in the U.S., Canada and Latin America.” And who could blame them? Almost everything that’s come from Netflix’s original content has been great, and the Marvel shows alone in the future are well worth the cost.
And hey, since you’re already (probably) sharing the dual simultaneous streams available on the standard plan with your friend/roommate, it’s really only a 50 cent increase! That’s not half bad.
