Fantastic Beasts Casts Gemma Chan, Carmen Ejogo, and Jon Voight

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has added Gemma Chan, Carmen Ejogo, and Jon Voight to their cast list. While there are no details yet about what their roles will be, this casting news is a breath of fresh air since we’re finally starting to see some diversity. We’ve been following the Fantastic Beasts casting news for a while, and it hasn’t been the best in that aspect, something especially concerning because of J.K. Rowling’s comment that the story will incorporate “indigenous magic.”

Of course, casting two non-white actresses isn’t the magical antidote for fixing diversity. If Rowling is going to include references to real Native American tribes, the casting would ideally be culturally accurate as well. I’m excited to see what kind of roles they’ll play (our contributor Constance Gibbs has some great suggestions!) and I hope their parts will be larger and more complex than those in the Harry Potter films, as much as I love them.

What do you think about the casting?
