Stephen Colbert may not be as into playing games with his guests on The Late Show as late night rival Jimmy Fallon, but he saw an opportunity to still act the gentleman with Donald Trump while letting the presidential candidate basically mock himself, and he went for it.
Taking a page out of BuzzFeed’s book, Colbert put together a “who said it” test with quotes from himself (in-character on The Colbert Report) and Trump, because it’s difficult to distinguish between two bloviating right-wing caricatures. Trump scored admirably, likely because it’s easier when one of the choices is yourself, but he still did manage to attribute something he said to Colbert’s character, and that’s really all we could’ve asked for.
And then, of course, there’s the fact that while Trump was able to almost always distinguish which statements came from which person, they don’t sound all that different outside of specific wording. You can go ahead and watch their interview for yourself—complete with some familiar Colbert Report-style humor—but this short game segment said way more than an interview could:
