The View‘s Hosts Disrespect Nurses, Writers, Actors, and Women in One TV Moment

YOU know that nurses use stethoscopes...right?

So, The View recently debuted some new hosts, and it seems like the show is now … still as catty and asinine as it has been. And apparently, there are lots of things that new host Michelle Collins doesn’t know. Check out the video above in which Collins gives us her thoughts about this year’s Miss America pageant—specifically, the talent competition.

Now, here’s the monologue Collins was talking about, performed by Miss Colorado 2015 Kelley Johnson about her career as a nurse:

Now, the eventual winner of the pageant might have been better at her talent (opera), but watching this monologue in full just highlights the cattiness and ignorance in Collins’ comments, as well as those of her fellow hosts:

Collins: Turn the volume up, this is going be amazing, let’s listen. She came out in a nurse’s uniform and basically read her emails out loud and shockingly did not win.

Joy Behar: Seriously?!

Collins: I swear to God it was hilarious.

First of all, the fact that she was already skeptical about someone doing a monologue was annoying. But secondly, her assessment that Johnson “basically read her emails out loud” was just flat out wrong. Johnson was telling a story from her own life that she crafted into a monologue. Maybe Collins doesn’t have the attention span to listen to someone else talking rather than talking herself, but writing is a talent. Delivering a monologue is a talent.

Perhaps if The View had better writers and the hosts were better at their patter, they’d know that.

Behar: Why does she have a doctor’s stethoscope on?

BECAUSE SHE’S A NURSE, AND NURSES USE STETHOSCOPES! Thankfully, actual nurses came out in full force to call out this little bit of ignorance on Twitter.

Today on The View, Joy Behar and crew mocked Miss Colorado Kelly Johnson for appearing on stage in her nurses uniform….

In short, the hosts of The View don’t know that writing is a talent, delivering a monologue is a talent, and that nurses wear stethoscopes. They also seem really attached to an old-school vision of what Miss America is supposed to be about. Rather than celebrating the fact that one of the contestants is so committed to her medical career that she chose to incorporate that into her talent—rather than celebrating that Johnson is not only a beautiful woman, but one with job that requires not only skill, but compassion—they chose to reduce her to a joke as a talking point on their show.

It’s nice to know the hosts of The View have their priorities in order. And sure, there’s plenty of cattiness in this very post. I guess that’s ’cause game recognize catty game.
