Goodbye, Woodhouse: Archer‘s George Coe Dies at 86

I'll be over here eating a big bowl of spiderwebs in tribute.

It’s a sad day for Archer fans. Voice actor George Coe, who voiced Archer’s long-suffering but ultimately fascinating butler Woodhouse on the FX animated series, died at the age of 86 after suffering an unspecified protracted illness.

Coe had a career spanning five decades, doing everything from Broadway, to acting onscreen, to voice work. He was one of SNL‘s original Not Ready for Prime Time Players, has appeared in classic films like Kramer Vs. Kramer, been all over TV on shows like The West Wing, Gilmore Girls, and Star Trek: The Next Generation, and was nominated for an Oscar for a 1968 comedy short film in which he starred and co-directed called The Dove.

While there’s still no word from Archer creator, Adam Reed, on how Coe’s death will be handled in the mostly-unwritten Season Seven of the show, I hope that Woodhouse gets a send-off rather than being recast. It would be interesting to see how Archer deals with not having Woodhouse to kick around anymore, and it would be a great tribute to an accomplished actor.

RIP, Mr. Coe.
