Watch This Trailer For The Cancelled Lady-Led Cry On & Be Mad You Won’t Get To Play

I'll cry on, all right.

In 2005, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi announced that he was working on an roleplay game for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 that featured a young female protagonist, Sally, and her golem companion Bogie. Sadly the project was canned in 2008, but last week Sakaguchi released a trailer that’s rekindled a lot of interest in the cancelled game. Seriously, who else would go out and buy this tomorrow if they could?

Announced as a collaboration between Mistwalker Studio and AG Interactive with a 1 billion yen (or $8.5 million) budget, Cry On was imagined as part of a fantastical world where humans used colossal sand giants like Bogie as instruments of war. Throughout the game payers would swap between Sally for exploration and puzzle-solving, and Bogie for combat. Character designs were done by Drakengard‘s Kimihiko Fujisaka, and Final Fantasy composer Nobou Uetmatsu would have supplied the score.

So why was the game cancelled? At the time, the studio cited global economic concerns, as well as “the property’s uncertain franchise potential.” Meaning that they didn’t see it selling very well, in layman’s terms. Sounds kind of bogus, if you ask me—just look at the cosplay potential from this video alone.

It’s unclear whether or not Sakaguchi intended to gauge possible fan response on the project by releasing this video so late after its cancellation. But even if Cry On never sees the light of day past this point, these few minutes in and of themselves tell a gorgeously rendered story that definitely provokes an emotional response. I just wish we could play around in Sally’s world for a little bit longer.
