Welp, it was only a matter of time. But there’s a writer on board for this particular remake that might mitigate some of your kneejerk anti-remake rage (which you shouldn’t have anyways).
That would be Mike Flanagan, who directed and co-wrote the Katee Sackhoff/Karen Gillan horror flick Oculus, which I know a lot of you (and Jill) liked… those who could get yourselves to the theater to see it, that is. Not me. I’m a wimp.
Flanagan’s producing as well, along with Oculus’ co-producer Jeff Howard and Neal Moritz, who co-produced the original teen scream classic (yeah, that’s right, classic). There’s no word on a director yet, though it wouldn’t be surprising if Flanagan were to get the job. Deadline notes that this new movie, being helmed by Sony, will technically be a second adaptation of Lois Lowry’s 1973 book instead of a remake of the 1997 film, which is just the sort of hair-splitting statement a studio makes when they want to avoid being tarred with the remake brush. The Coen brothers can get away with it.
Because it’s 5:00 on what has been the slowest news day ever, let’s have a ball fancasting this mother in the comments section. The Rock and Channing Tatum for Freddie Prinze Jr.’s and Ryan Phillippe’s characters. Katee Sackhoff and Karen Gillan for Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Shhhh, shhhh. Just go with it.
