Two-Headed Turtle “Thelma and Louise” Dies at San Antonio Zoo After Living More Than a Year

We'll miss you, little friend.

Thelma and Louise was a bicephalic (two-headed) turtle born at the San Antonio Zoo in Texas, but sadly the zoo has just announced through the turtle’s official Facebook page that she has died.

Thelma and Louise’s recent birthday celebration was a big event for the zoo, and her Facebook page has garnered nearly 8,500 Likes. Besides photos of the turtle the page also focused of turtle conservation throughout the world, something the zoo has asked fans to keep in mind even after her death.

They said in the post announcing Thelma and Louise’s death:

Help keep Thelma and Louise’s memory alive by continuing to support and donate to turtle and tortoise conservation worldwide. While many animal groups are imperiled globally, turtles and tortoises suffer the worse fate. The San Antonio Zoo will truly miss this tiny, yet giant, turtle conservation ambassador.

Her condition was unusual but not unheard of in turtles, but was still cause for her to need daily intensive care. Her exact cause of death has yet to be determined.

After writing about her Facebook account last year (exactly one year ago, actually), I followed Thelma and Louise’s page and really liked getting updates about her. I’m going to miss those posts in my feed.
