American Psycho Musical Coming to the US Sadly Won’t Bring Matt Smith With It

What rhymes with "I need to return some videotapes?"

Bret Easton Ellis’ novel American Psycho criticizes self-obsessed New Yorkers, so it only makes sense that after a UK run starring Matt Smith a musical adaptation of the book will move off-Broadway next year. Actors of New York, start practicing dancing in raincoats now.

The show was adapted for the London stage by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, a writer for Marvel that assisted on revisions for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Music and lyrics come courtesy of Duncan Sheik, most well-known for his work on Spring Awakening.

American Psycho will begin New York previews in February of 2015, and open in March. A Hollywood Reporter review of the London stage adaptation warned that the musical

almost glosses over the book’s notoriously graphic carnage altogether, aiming instead for a darkly funny tone that plays at times like a light-headed, razzle-dazzle social satire. A little lacking in focus, it feels more like a series of splashy set-pieces than a serious literary adaptation.

Hopefully planned revisions before the U.S. premiere will preserve the book’s serious message and prevent the show from getting…the axe. And 5! 6! 7! 8!
