Publix’s deli is where shoppers can pick up things like made-to-order subs or ready-to-eat meals, sides, and grab-and-go options.

It’s especially known for its “Pub Subs,” but the refrigerated section also carries plenty of quick meals for customers who don’t feel like cooking. Among them are À La Carte breakfast burritos, including Uncured Bacon, Potatoes & Egg and Egg, Pork Sausage & Potatoes.

One Publix shopper, however, sounded the alarm about the breakfast burrito, specifically, the bacon, potatoes, and egg option.

Unfortunately, TikTok creator @realblkgem only noticed what was wrong with it after taking a bite.

What Was Wrong With The Publix Breakfast Burrito?

“Yesterday around six PM, I bought this, À La Carte uncured, blah, blah, blah,” she begins. “Sounds good, right?”

She says she first put the burrito in her air fryer. However, when the tortilla didn’t get as crispy as she wanted, she moved it into a pan.

Then, she took her first bite.

“I was like, oh, that is a weird taste,” she recalls.

As she ate, a piece of the burrito came out, prompting her to take a closer look.

“That looks like… y’all… mold,” she says.

She then opens the burrito further and shows the filling to the camera. The ingredients appear gray throughout, despite nothing inside the burrito seemingly being that color naturally.

“All through mold,” she says. “You can smell it.”

Apparently, she hadn’t noticed anything was wrong before cooking it. “I don’t know how. I guess I didn’t smell it before I opened it up,” she says. “I’m so mad.”

She says the taste lingered after that first bite. “I can still taste it in my throat,” she says.

Commenters Are Horrified

Viewers immediately urged her to take the situation seriously.

“Put it in a ziplock and go to the emergency room,” one commenter wrote.

However, since she says she only took one bite, serious health consequences would be unlikely for the average healthy person.

Food microbiology experts speaking to Today explained that most healthy people won’t get sick after accidentally ingesting a small amount of mold. Stomach acids and digestive enzymes generally break down the mold cells before they cause a problem.

That doesn’t mean the experience is pleasant, though.

“I would feel so sick,” another viewer wrote.

And according to @realblkgem, she did.

“I did. It was disgusting and I was … SICK for an hour after eating it,” she responded.

Meanwhile, another commenter suggested this might not be an isolated incident. “Second video I’ve seen …. Publix needs to take these off the shelves,” they wrote.

Publix Customers Have Complained About Moldy Burritos Before

There are other online reports of customers allegedly finding mold in Publix breakfast burritos.

In one r/Publix thread discussing food waste at the chain, a commenter shared their own experience with one of the products.

“I ate a moldy breakfast burrito that was donated from Publix…” they wrote, in part.

A self-identified Publix employee then responded with an even more concerning claim.

“Those breakfast burritos should all be recalled, we pulled our entire shelf because they all had mold in them even though they were still good for another week,” they wrote.

Another Publix customer also posted a photo to Reddit showing what appeared to be visible mold growing on the tortilla of a breakfast burrito.

“Super depressed and haven’t eaten in 2 days. Decided to get a breakfast burrito,” they wrote. “Probably won’t eat for another 2 now. Thanks publix.”
