Parents, Please, On No Account Should You Let Your Daughters Read Fiction

Olden Lore

This blast from the past reminds us that it’s not just comic books and video games that labor under the stigma of being bad for intellectual development.  In fact, this is a cycle that human beings have been going through pretty much every time a new artistic medium becomes real popular with the younger generation.  The motion picture industry inspired a bit of histeria, and, going back further, even works of fiction in novel form were considered unsuitable for consumption by young ladies.  The idea was that if a woman spent too much time reading, she would eventually become unsuitable as a wife and mother.

It’s probably far to late for me, but at least that means I can finish reading A Princess of Mars.

Susana Polo thought she'd get her Creative Writing degree from Oberlin, work a crap job, and fake it until she made it into comics. Instead she stumbled into a great job: founding and running this very website (she's Editor at Large now, very fancy). She's spoken at events like Geek Girl Con, New York Comic Con, and Comic Book City Con, wants to get a Batwoman tattoo and write a graphic novel, and one of her canine teeth is in backwards.
