‘The Pro Peace President’: Trump Gets Caught in a Lie as He Refuses to Acknowledge His Past Opposition to War

In the lead-up to the 2024 Presidential elections, Donald Trump made several promises he assured he would fulfill if he won. One of them was that he and his party (the Republican Party) would put an end to wars and promote peace and the well-being of the United States and its people. However, ever since Trump became President, his stance on this issue seems to have changed quite a bit.
If the US waging a war in Iran wasn’t enough proof that Donald Trump has changed his position on war, a recent interview makes it clear that he isn’t against the idea. In fact, he says he is pro-war and seems very proud of that.
Donald Trump’s comments about war are going viral
On June 7, 2026, NBC News uploaded a ‘Meet the Press’ interview with President Donald Trump on YouTube and other platforms, in which he said several controversial things. However, amidst all that he said, the one gaining the most traction online, especially on X (formerly Twitter), is the part where he essentially says he supports war while rebuking comments claiming he stressed otherwise.
During the interview, when journalist Kristen Welker asked Trump to comment on what had changed between his promise that there would be no wars and his current involvement in one, while aiming for many others, Trump refused to acknowledge his past comments on the topic. He said, “I didn’t guarantee no war. Why would I have built the strongest military in the world? I built our military. I inherited a terrible military. We had no equipment…. Biden gave a lot of it away, but it’s still a relatively small portion compared to what I built.” Then, when Welker attempted to establish that he had indeed made such comments about war, Trump doubled down and said, “Why would I build a military? I didn’t want to use this, but I’m doing you and everybody else a big favor. In the midst of the greatest stock market in history, in the midst of the most successful country, as you know, we were a dead country.”
During the same interview, Trump walked out under pressure
Another moment from the ‘Meet the Press’ interview, which is currently going viral on social media, including X, is when Donald Trump walked out after being pressed to answer questions about the 2020 elections. After Joe Biden was announced the winner of the 2020 US presidential election, Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that the election was “rigged” and “stolen” from him. He still holds the same views in 2026.
During the ‘Meet the Press’ interview with Kristen Welker, she questioned Trump on the 2020 elections and the anti-weaponization fund. He repeatedly emphasized the negative impact of the “stolen” 2020 elections and highlighted how they affected him and his supporters. At one point, Welker noted that there was no evidence to support his claims that the elections were “stolen,” which led Trump to insist there was indeed proof that they were. This sparked a back-and-forth between Trump and Welker, with both making opposing statements. The altercation ended with Trump calling out Welker and eventually walking out of the interview.
