“What if everyone woke up with superpowers –- and it was the worst thing in the world?” That’s the question asked by Rob Williams and D’Israeli in their new Titan Comics title Ordinary. It hits the shelves Wednesday, but we got an early look at issue #1 and think it’s worth your time, here’s why.
In Ordinary #1 a worldwide event hits that leaves everyone on Earth with superpowers — except for Michael, a down-on-his-luck plumber. As you’d expect, the world doesn’t necessarily handle its sudden change very well and gets out of control quickly. Giants, flying dragons, a kid with a literal Midas touch, and countless more are all on the loose. There’s also Michael’s friend and coworker Brian, who’s a bear now.
In the midst of this catastrophe, Michael is left unchanged, but he has to try to navigate a now superpowered New York City to get to his son Josh to make sure he’s okay.
Issue #1 is almost entirely setup. We meet Michael, Brian, and a few other characters that seem like they’re be recurring. The issue itself doesn’t have much of a standalone story, but it does a great job of setting up the world, and I’m already invested in Michael. There’s also a world full of superpowered people, so it’s probably a safe bet showing off some strange powers are going to be a recurring thing in Ordinary.
Considering almost every superhero story starts with an origin story where someone is suddenly gifted with powers and has to deal with the ramifications, Ordinary provides a nice turn. Instead of one person’s struggle to deal with being different, we’re seeing the planet struggle with it, while Michael has to deal with being left out.
Ordinary #1Â goes on sale this Wednesday May 28th through Titan Comics, and I highly recommend you add it to your pull list.
