Sony’s Doing a Mother-Daughter Meta Horror Comedy About Final Girls, Be Still My Beating Heart

Bloody Good Fun

Sony’s The Final Girls is not this The Final Girls, an upcoming ABC Family TV show starring Jamie Lee Curtis. Do you know what this means? It means there are multiple projects about final girls in the works. One of them probably needs to change its name, though.

A lot’s been written about the final girl character, but the tl;dr of it is that she’s a horror heroine, the one who survives to the end when everybody else gets cut to bits. (Because she’s smart and resourceful and doesn’t have sex, because if you’re a lady who has sex in a horror movie you’ll probably die.) This new The Final Girls, just picked up for distribution by Sony, will star American Horror Story’s Taissa Farmiga as a teenager named Max who gets sucked into an ‘80s slasher movie. While there she meets her recently deceased mom, played by Malin Ackerman, who was a famous scream queen back in the day. Director Todd Strauss-Schulson (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) describes the film thusly:

“It’s Pleasantville in a trashy horror movie from the ’80s with a little Back to the Future thrown in and a spoon full of Terms of Endearment with a dash of Scream and two dollops of Purple Rose of Cairo for good measure.”

Sounds to me like Last Action Hero should be thrown into that list, which is a good thing, because I have a soft spot in my heart for Last Action Hero. Guys. Female-starring meta horror comedy about a mother/daughter relationship. The Cabin in the Woods, with the added benefit of being about ladies.

If this movie ends up sucking I am going to rip out my hair and weep tears of bitterness.

The final girls show, by the way, is sort of a Charlie’s Angels deal, with Jamie Lee Curtis bringing together a group of girls “who have, in essence, survived their own personal horror stories.” I can’t imagine we’re anywhere near getting a release date for either, but you can trust us to keep you in the loop.
