The Creator of Orange Is the New Black Is Doing a Show About the Salem Witch Trials

…but it won’t be on Netflix, so you’ll have to actually wait a week between episodes instead of binging all at once. I know, I know. The struggle is real.

Jenji Kohan, the creator of Weeds and Netflix’s über-successful Orange Is the New Black, is turning to HBO to develop a “provocative period drama” about the Salem witch trials. And that’s literally all we know so far, except that it’ll be written by Kohan, Tracy Miller, and Bruce Miller and executive produced by Kohan and Bruce Miller. He has experience executive producing a metric ton of shows, among them Eureka, Alphas, Everwood, and Medium. So he knows what he’s doing, and so does Kohan, whose OINTB I will get around to watching one day, I swear. And it’s HBO, which has a good record with historical dramas that don’t skimp when it comes to the budget and hiring great actors.

I, for one, am enthused. For all that the Salem witch trials were a terrible part of history, they were a terribly interesting one too, and a show on them could have a lot to say about human nature and peoples’ tendency to dogpile on each other. Have you seen that theory that everyone in Salem was basically hopped up on LSD? History, man. History.

Plus Kohan’s received a lot of praise for the level of diversity in her shows. And thank goodness, because I am sick of historical shows that have like one non-white person. Historical POCs: They existed, studios. I know. Shocking.
