Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine Gets An 8-Bit Makeover

Recommended Videos

Nine Inch Nails has always been part of video game history ever since the soundtrack of Quake (somewhat confusingly attributed to both Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails). But imagine if that classic, industrial sound had its roots even further back in the video gaming world. Well imagine no more, with the help of Kickstarter, Inverse Phase has remade and demade the classic Pretty Hate Machine as an 8-bit soundtrack, and it’s pretty awesome.

Over a year ago, when pitching the project to potential Kickstarters, Inverse Phase stated the preference toward Pretty Hate Machine was in part because the album already sounded so “gamey,” and listening to the full chiptune album, you can tell that he was totally right; the transition to 8-bit seems fantastically natural. And the puns? Amazing. “Head Like I/O”? Sold.

You can listen to the entire album for free below or on Inverse Phase’s bandcamp page. If you’d like to contribute, you can pick up a digital copy for $6.50, or an old-fashioned physical CD for $10. If nothing else, it’s definitely worth a listen.
