The Mary Sue’s Holiday Gift Guide 2013: Toys, Games, and Oddities

1.Hallmark Star Wars Ornaments
Hallmark, of course, has provided its yearly line of
Star Wars ornaments, and while there's something to be said about hanging Jabba the Hutt from your tree (presumably from a sturdy branch close to the trunk), I think my favorite is this midair Jango Fett.
2.Classic Video Game Controller Ornaments
Of course maybe you prefer a more technologically ornamented tree. In that case you might want to take a look at ThinkGeek's
controller ornament series.
There are plenty of holiday traditions that don't involve a tree, though, and one of those is playing games. I remember playing
Story War when it was still in beta and even then the game's potential to get a whole room engaged was evident. Check out the game's description and see if it's something someone you know would sink their teeth into.
Okay, so this isn't a present you can give immediately. But if you tell any nerd about the gameplay of
Slash, they will be willing to wait. Slash is a successful Kickstarter game where players create crossover romantic pairings from their hand of cards and then argue over whose is the best. It's Apples to Apples, but with slash fiction. If that doesn't interest you, fine. But if it does, you are probably now vibrating with excitement. The former of you should buy it for the latter of you.
5.DC Comics Aardman Figurines
DC has been casually releasing figurines of the adorable Aardmanized versions of its major heroes and villains created for DC Nation's stop motion shorts, and now you can get some lucky geek
all of them in one set.
6.Jane Austen, the Action Figure
We can't talk about action figures without mentioning this
Jane Austen action figure. Perfect to pair with any Walking Dead, Sailor Moon, or Doctor Who figurines you may have.
And speaking of
Doctor Who, a the nexus of Who, My Little Pony, and Funko Pop, you'll find this figurine of Doctor Whooves. You'll also find Tumblr.
8.Grumpy Cat Plush
The best thing about
a Grumpy Cat Plush is that even if you miscalculated and the person you get it for doesn't know who Grumpy Cat is, you still got them a pretty funny plush toy.
We return from a brief Grumpy cat interlude to talk about
Doctor Who again. This time . Doctor Who and potatoes
Ophelia's Etsy shop of
handpainted mugs with literary and geeky quotes might look a little threadbare now, but it promises a big Black Friday blowout. So you should definitely see if it fits anyone on your list.
Luxury Lane Soap makes
soap for lots of fandoms, from Star Wars, comics, Legos, video games, The Last Unicorn and more. But we pulled out BMO because BMO is so cute as soap!
12.Game of Thrones House Magnets
Nobody actually wants to live in the world of
Game of Thrones, except when it comes to food. And that's why you should put house emblems on your refrigerator.
13.Broad Sword Umbrella
And finally two items for those nerd who really
do have everything. Because even if they bought the extended The Hobbit DVD on day one, they probably still don't have a broadsword umbrella.
Yes. A skull. See, the Mütter Museum of the College of Physicians is offering the public
a chance to save medical history. They've got over 100 skulls, but no money to restore them, so for $200 a head (heh heh) you can adopt a skull and have your name placed next to it, alongside what biographical information the museum has about the skull's former occupant. The skulls themselves are part of a collection that helped disprove phrenology and other racist assumptions about skull shape. The money goes towards restoring them and making sure they're placed in a new display that will preserve them for many long years to come.
They say the best gifts are experiences, not things, and whether you agree with that or not, you’ll find something in this post. From silly and unique toys and knickknacks to some very intriguing games, rounded out with a few things that even the person who has everything probably doesn’t have.
