Sh*t Nerds Say

I admit to not being a big fan of the “Sh*t Girls Say” videos, because for every line that makes me defensively go “yeah, I say that all the time, what?” there are three that confirm that the video has a very narrow definition of “girls.” You know, to one specific kind of personality type, in a specific kind of demographic group, and blah blah blah big words but basically it’s those kind of sweeping generalizations that ruin a joke for me.

Now, Sh*t Nerds Say might visually narrow itself to male nerds, but, as you might have guessed, I’m far more comfortable labeling myself as nerd or geek than as girl, and on top of that it leaves me feeling proud that I belong to a nerd community when I say these things.

I think that being able to laugh at yourself — whether you’re a nerd and/or girl — takes a special skill many of us lack, me included.

When others are laughing at you for being what you are, you don’t really feel like laughing with them, do you? Me neither.

I suppose it depends on just how comfortable you are in your own skin. Next time I’m asked to fix a computer, I’ll be sure to make them bow down to my awesomeh nerd powah. Maybe I’ll even laugh maniacally. (cue lightning).

I’m perfectly capable of laughing at myself, but I have a problem when I’m asked to laugh at women. Or gay people, or Asian people, etc. Any arbitrary grouping of people that is way less homogeneous than popular portrayals are willing to admit. So, every arbitrary grouping of people.

Oh hey! I went to college with this guy and I’m happy to see he’s still at G4 and still being funny.

This isn’t really one of those “funny cos it’s true” things cos, you know, it’s just true…  It’d be like having a “Shit French People Say” and have a video where a guy just talks in French O.o

Yeah I say almost everything in the nerd video, and almost nothing in the girls video. So I guess I’m a nerd *rather* than a girl. ;)

But it only counts as ‘laughing at yourself’ if the jokes actually apply to you…

It’d be more interesting to have a ‘Sh*t nerd girls say’ that neither male nerds nor non-nerdy girls say. The list of things on the back of a pair of ‘geek girl glasses’ (there were ‘geek guy glasses’ for sale too) included some generic nerdage but also references to stuff like Etsy and knitting that’s predominantly geek-girly. Any other examples?

Actually, I laughed at Sh&t Girls Say because it just so happens that those are things I say all the time…as a gay man and things I come across with a number of conversations with my gal pals.

The Sh&t Gay Guys Say version wasn’t funny (but I wasn’t offended) because I didn’t identify with many of those things, though I saw where it was coming from, and I have friends who would probably say those things.

Sh&t Black Girls Say was funny to me, and, at the risk of tokenising my friends, my black girlfriends thought it was hilarious.

*Shrug*. I think if you asked the people who made all four of these if these are things all nerds/not-nerd girls/black girls/gay guys say and do, the obvious answer would be “no”.

It’s missing a girl sloppily dressed as a guy, making it twenty times more offensive.
