A few weeks back we here at The Mary Sue office were discussing S.H.I.E.L.D.—you know, like you do. “Wait,” the collective Mary Sue hivemind was thinking. “It’s supposed to start shooting in January, right? And there are five main characters. But haven’t they only cast four? Aren’t they kind of coming up against a deadline here?”
But lo, now the fifth person has been cast. Nashville‘s Chloe Bennet will be playing Skye, “a confident woman who is slightly obsessed with superhero culture and the shadow organizations that exist within it. She’s edgy and can out-talk anyone with her unflappable nature.”
Ooooh. Whedon-y.
The original casting call identified Skye as a “late-20s woman [who] sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.” The fact that she’s basically a geek girl is new, though not unexpected considering, well, Joss Whedon.
She’s a geek girl obsessed with superhero-adjacent shadow organizations who gets to work with a superhero-adjacent shadow organization. Jealous.
So now that the core cast is all assembled (ba-doom-tiss), when can we expect S.H.I.E.L.D. on our TVs? Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel TV, confirmed that the show is expected to begin filming in January of 2013 and that “Hopefully we will be on in the Fall of 2013 on ABC!”
One last S.H.I.E.L.D. bit to tide you over until we start getting set photos: Samuel L. Jackson has spoken up about a possible Nick Fury appearance. “I keep hearing about [the show], and I haven’t talked to Joss about it,” he said.”But in my mind, I would tend to think that he would, if nothing else, be like Charlie in ‘Charlie’s Angels.’ At least be the voice!”
Yes. I approve.
