Margot Robbie’s excitement about her role in Suicide Squad feels downright infectious. In spite of how Jared Leto’s antics as the Joker have almost neutralized my excitement about the movie, Robbie seems able to turn my hype wagon back around. Robbie recently told Cineplex,
Harley is creepy, violent, crazy — all of the things that I aspire to be! [laughs] No. It’s the fun of living vicariously through someone who is doing things that I would never do in real life.
As for which co-star Robbie felt most excited about joining on set … it’s not Jared Leto, but Will Smith! No surprise there, given Smith’s years-long reputation as a great guy — a reputation that Robbie backs up wholeheartedly. In her words:
I enjoyed working with Will so, so much that I was overjoyed when I heard that we would be working together again. I actually texted him when I heard he was in negotiations to be in Suicide Squad and kept peer-pressuring him, ‘You’d better be taking this movie!’ He obviously signed on for his own reasons, but I was so incredibly happy that we got to do Round Two. He’s awesome on set and awesome off set. He’s just a really, really good person.
The pair previously worked together in the film Focus, hence the reference to “Round Two.” Perhaps their real-life friendship and on-screen chemistry is what led to the inclusion of a “love triangle” between their characters and Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad? Knowing that the actors probably had some fun with it does make me feel a little less icky about that story-line.
Still, one can’t help but notice that neither Robbie nor Smith seem to have much to say about the third participant in their “triangle”. By all reports, the whole squad got along great on-set — except for Leto, who didn’t seem to socialize much. I guess that’s about on-par with what I’d expect from the Joker … or, at least, what I’d expect from someone who insists on method-acting as the Joker!
