And This Is How The Phantom Menace Could Have Been Amazing [Video]

Michael Barryte has done the world the huge, frustrating favor of figuring out exactly how to improve the much-aligned Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. No, really. He figured out how to make it not just a good Star Wars movie, but a good movie. To watch. And not want to throw things at. If you can spare about 12 minutes to hear Michael out, join us after the jump and see how this movie could have been excellent.

By the end of this video, you will be so angry that Barryte’s ideas are about a decade and a half too late.

Seriously, filmmakers: if you have any doubts about your sci-fi script, get in touch with Michael Barryte. He will fix all of the problems.

I feel sad that his version is so much more epic than the original.

Ok, I agree with almost everything. But Yoda fighting is the only thing that made the prequels watchable in their current form.

Still would have sucked.  George is a great idea man but a lame director, keep him as exec producer and let other people do the rest.  No matter how you reorganize it he’d still allow Jake Lloyd one take for all his lines, and show the entire movie in shot/reverse shot discussions.

Just cut the whole movie out.  It’s a redundant story that can be explained in a title scroll or woven into the 2nd movie dialouge (by a good writer).

I wish I could have watched that movie :( It sounds pretty epic.

I have absolutely no objection to Obi-Wan being the main character, nor this treatment of what that would be like.

Am I still a SW fan? I think so.

I’d be curios to poll Star Wars fans who hate the Star Wars movies to know their overall ideology.  I wonder if a large majority of the haters are from one side of the political spectrum, since it seems to also effect opinions on other movies and subjects.

I actually think story wise Episode I was the best of the modern series, because its story mattered the most to the rest of the Star Wars universe.  There are so many elements in that film that either show up or are similar to other events in Star Wars history.   I recall reading Star Wars books in the early 80′s, and I’ve noticed its never really stopped.  There are literally many thousands of hours of storyline among all the movies and books.  I think George’s movies fit just fine within that universe, which makes sense since the universe was based off of the first three films.

Seriously, where is the kickstarter to get this fan-made?

I think he’s on the right track, but this still ain’t it. The best way to improve the prequels would have been to cut the fanservice, (ahem C3PO) and streamline the stories to re-focus on the character and themes. The prequels really suck, but if you step back and discuss the themes and character stuff they raised, it actually has loads of potential. If only it weren’t so poorly handled. So, yes, make Obi-Wan more obviously the protagonist of the prequel trilogy. Emphasize Qui-Gon’s weird, obsessive fixation on the fact that Anakin might be the chosen one, emphasize Obi-Wan’s sense of betrayal that his master is moving on/ his sense of responsible upon Qui Gon’s death, move it into an interesting but ultimately good caring relationship with Anakin. And for Anakin, make him less obnoxiously confident, more damaged. Keep Palaptine the way he is, make the politics more intriguing and less procedural. Trim the fat from the plots, up the themes, better scripts. None of this Obi-Wan shipping, Darth Maul stuff. That’s it. Much better.

There’s no reason for Obi-wan to feel betrayed though at all, his master has just told him that he’s ready to be a full fledged jedi there’s no reason for him to feel anything but exstatic.

I disagree. Watching Yoda fight was akin to watching a scene from the Muppet Show. But the Muppets are supposed to be funny. Not all Jedi’s should carry lightsabers.

I was with you until you said to cut Darth Maul. Sorry, he’s badass. He’s one of the best parts of the movie, and it’s a shame they killed him off while Jar Jar lasted the whole run. >_<

  • http://www.facebook.com/david.schmitt#!/ David R. Schmitt

But he only told Obi-wan that AFTER Anakin came onto the scene. By then you can see Qui-gon only had eyes for this potential “Balance of the Force” kid. You could tell Qui-gon was a bit of a fanatic when it came to this prophecy and I think it would have been interesting had they played that up more in the movie.

Oh I agree! Darth Maul is essential! I meant cut this guy’s suggestion to awkwardly resurrect him. Sorry, should have been more clear. If anything, a better Episode I would have expanded Maul’s character. I still think he would work best as a one movie thing. But he definitely deserved more development and a better death.

  • Frodo Baggins

Agreed that it’s not there yet. Involving Obi Wan in a romantic triangle sounds particularly off, and even if Anikin is no longer the protagonist, cutting him out of the climax completely is counter-productive. And Palpatine can’t tell whose force affinity he’s sensing? Sorry, time for a third draft.

I want more!  This is Brilliant!  Sigh….If frickin only.

Can you go re-storyline The Little Mermaid too, please! “I’ll get myself genetically modified for the love of a man from another species.” I think we can find a more empowering message for that movie’s audience of impressionable girls.

Another Prequel Trilogy basher who believes he/she can do better.  HOW . . . FUCKING . . . BORING!!!
