Just What You've Always Wanted

Community Promises All Puppet Episode

Community‘s fourth season ratings have not been the greatest. In fact, the Halloween episode grabbed the lowest ratings the show has ever had. And while I wouldn’t preface this statement with “in response,” this is not a situation in which I’d fault the folks who run Community these days for bringing out the big guns:

All. Puppet. Episode.

In case you haven’t been any where near the internet in a while, Community is no stranger to the mixed media approach, with episodes featuring stop-motion animation, 8-bit style video game imagery, and even a foosball tournament in anime style. Frankly, it’s shocking the all-puppet episode hasn’t come up before. The episode’s conceit was revealed during the Community panel at PaleyFest, a television festival held at the Paley Center for Media. From Deadline:

An all-puppet episode featuring extensive use of the performers in puppet form will air in April and include a cameo from Jason Alexander (though not as a puppet). As the panel closed, the cast mates brought out their puppet lookalikes to revel in the moment.

So what you’re telling me is that Jason Alexander isn’t a puppet? Man. I could have sworn.

Would you guys turn in for a puppet episode? Would you do it if they confirmed a puppet Dean?

I’ve been really disappointed with the Community episodes this season (and kind of gave up, but am keeping an eye out if it goes back to form, IMHO), but I will definitely try to catch this one!

    Foosball anime scene.

Honestly – I wish they would just focus on the characters that the great actors bring alive. They seem to think we need the gimmicks to be invested, but that is far from the case. It’s been a bit too much of that this season. Consider the Bottle Episode, one of the greatest of the bunch. Or Advanced Dungeons and Dragons pulled off without a single costume change (except for Pierce’s make-shift throne). In this season they would have made them all dress up and completely missed how the story should be the focus.
Save the puppets for season 6…
(that said – I’d LOVE to be proven wrong)

YOU’RE RIGHT. It was totally foosball. Edits will roll.

I dunno, maybe the Halloween episode might have fared better if it were aired in October instead of February. And maybe the show as a whole would rate better if they had, I dunno, actually put some effort into airing when people expected to see it in fall.

Sure the show has lost something without Dan Harmon, but it’s still better than most of the crap out there. I just wish they weren’t writing with the “we need to provide a conclusion, so all loose ends must be tied” attitude for the whole season. Save that for the last three or four episodes.

Will the puppet episode work? We’ll see. I’m sticking it out.
