Watch as Stephen Colbert points out that since Merida from Brave had the courage to resist an arranged marriage she didn’t want, she must be a lesbian, and thus a pawn of Pixar’s Gay Agenda. You know, because challenging traditional gender roles makes you gay. All joking aside, it’s actually a pretty common interpretation of Brave. That’s not to say it would be awful if Merida were gay (it would be awesome) it’s just that it misses the point of the movie — all girls, gay, straight, or otherwise, should be able to choose their own destiny. Perhaps no one got the memo about Merida putting off marriage until she actually figured out who she loved?

Wow… what a classic example of “calm down, it’s a joke.”

For the record, Colbert is obviously joking, but the many film critics who are suggesting she’s gay merely because she refuses an arranged marriage, are not joking.

I would make a comment about how ridiculous it is that people think Merida is a lesbian, but then I remember that I was a rebellious tomboy who didn’t listen to my mother, and she also thought I was a lesbian for a while. So maybe that’s a thought process that occurs semi-commonly after all?

“You know, because challenging traditional gender roles makes you gay.”

^This is something that I’ve noticed and have dealt with first hand since I was a youngin’ and is something that is still rampant even to this day.

Goodness. I kept up with as many reviews of Brave as I could before the film came out, and I was disgusted by how many reviewers were ironically/unironically tossing speculation about her sexuality based on her hobbies and disinterest in marriage. It’s annoying, it’s whiny, and it just keeps pushing forth age-old stereotypes about sexuality all over the board. ‘Lesbians do this’, ‘Straights do this’, ‘Asexuals do this’, ‘Straights surely don’t do this!!!11′, etc.

My friend has had repeated inquiries about whether or not she’s lesbian because she’s been fed up with guys she’s met over the past few years and decided to stop dating. Cue ‘Are you a lesbian?’ and ‘lol dyke’ and ‘oh no you’re asexual!!!’ comments.

Thank you, Colbert, for managing to squeeze a little humor out of something unfunny and tired.

Yea, that was in response to you. The way you wrote it, it didn’t seem like you understood it was a joke. If you have a problem with one of the reviewers, use them as an example instead of picking out a comedian.

I can relate. My mom gave me the “are you a lesbian?” talk a few years ago. Oh, just because I don’t take shit, play videogames, and have no interest in being attached to someone’s hip I’m interested in girls? ahahahha Silliness.

I think the movie is intentionally made to be relatable for gay or transgender people, but in no way is Merida’s sexuality even hinted at. The only 3 guys she’s paired up with are not traditionally attrative looks or personality wise, but at the end are revealed to be just as nervous and unhappy about this as she is and might just prove capable of winning her heart when they don’t have to fit a role they’re forced in to.

So doesn’t that make Mulan gay too? She felt she didn’t fit in to the traditional gender role of her society, then cut off her hair and dressed like a boy. At the end, she and Shang are planning to have dinner together – not even a kiss.

I know Colbert is joking, and he is awesome, but this question has been posed by lots of movie reviewers on the web, probably for the controversy, but still: WHY is anyone even having this discussion? Can’t we just celebrate a strong girl role model and be done with it?!

Are they serious? A girl doesn’t want to get an arranged marriage, and that makes her gay by default? On what planet are these people from?

  • http://twitter.com/Riviare Riviera

I think it works better this way. Pointing out a comedian who is lampooning this very perspective is much less incendiary than pointing out the actual ignorant remarks and the people making them.

The point is still made (since Colbert is making the exact same point), and it’s done with a little humor.

Oh man, I LOVE Stephen Colbert. He is the best political satirist ever in my opinion. XD

Way to showcase him ripping on an unfunny, tired old cliche about women who buck traditional women roles.

Actually before I saw this post, I was already saying the girl was a lesbian after watching it. It’s obvious to me they made her look like a lesbo. But she acts like one too. There is an agenda behind EVERY Disney and Pixar movie made today. I can say this with full confidence because I know about the corporate pay-off that has those companies on board, politically. Use some common sense here. Its not hard to figure out that a big company loves money. And they’ll get it any way they can. They aren’t there to serve a community. It’s all about profit and that opens the door to opportunity for both them and the political architects. People can be so naive and gullible. Every time you take your kids to see these new flicks, you are an embarrassment.
