Black Widow To Share The Lead Role In Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

We got some revealing information from the summary of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. over the weekend, now it’s Captain America’s turn! Find out what kind of role Black Widow will play in the sequel film, a few casting confirmations plus, we’ve got our first official shot from the The Winter Soldier after the jump as well.

Marvel Entertainment has started production on the long-awaited Captain America: The Winter Soldier and sent out a synopsis and teaser photo to celebrate.

Following in the footsteps of the record-breaking Marvel Studios’ release, “Marvel’s The Avengers,” production on the highly anticipated release, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has commenced in Los Angeles, Calif., with production also including locations in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington D.C. Directing the film is the team of Anthony and Joe Russo (“Welcome to Collinwood”) from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) & Stephen McFeely (“Captain America: The First Avenger”). Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” returns Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”) as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America, along with Scarlett Johansson (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Iron Man 2”) as Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Iron Man 2”) as Nick Fury. In addition, film icon Robert Redford has joined the all-star cast as Agent Alexander Pierce, a senior leader within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release in the U.S. on April 4, 2014.

We basically knew all that, but here’s where the interesting bit comes in.

“‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ will pick-up where ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.”

So, this movie is going to be Johansson and Evans kicking ass together? Awesome. There’s more good news.

The summary went on to confirm Hayley Atwell’s return as Peggy Carter, which was previously suggested. Though in what capacity, we’re still not absolutely sure (most likely flashbacks). They also named Emily VanCamp as Agent 13, the alias of Sharon Carter.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be released April 4, 2014.

I would hope this doesn’t mean the Falcon and Sharon get shafted in screentime.
The costume also looks slightly different here.

  • Hawkes006

Is Hawkeye out for the rest of Marvel movies at this point?

  • TKS

Super excited for more Black Widow. Perhaps now we’ll be able to find some Black Widow merch in stores?

It’s also interesting, a popular topic of conversation between my friends and me before the Captain America movie came out (or was even announced) was “who could play Captain America?” The only name that came to my mind was “young Robert Redford.” (Though, Chris Evans did great.)

Unless he has a surprise appearance in Thor: The Dark World, I’m pretty sure Avengers 2 is his next appearance.

  • Pamela

I’m doing the Black Widow fangirl happy dance right now. Although I really, really hope they don’t try to shoehorn in a current-day romance with Bucky. Past, yes, but current? No thanks.

  • Christina Morejon

YES! this is excellent news! BW knows how to be a great heroine and be interesting too without being Marysue-ish.

  • Anonymous

I know what you mean, though (without getting too off topic) the phrase “Marysue” has been linked to sexism. If you mean two-diminsional, less though-out then in The Avengers, totes agree.

YAY!! So exciting! Would love to see Black Widow have her own movie, but this will do. For now :)

  • Mike Cassandra

It makes sense. I mean, out of all the Avengers characters they’ve introduced so far, she’s the only real S.H.I.E.L.D. field agent, and if they’re going with the Winter Soldier storyline, especially in DC, then they would definitely have a presence. I’m pretty excited to see how this movie plays out.

@twitter-15537198:disqus: It sucks that he’s not listed as being in more movies, but he’s kind of a tough fit. I mean, there’s no reason to shoehorn him into either Iron Man 3 or Thor 2… This might be the only movie where he would work, but again, it would be a shoehorn situation, where they’re forcing him into the script in order to get screen time for a character. Though, I would really like to see the Cap/Hawkeye dynamic we’ve all grown to love so much in the Avengers comics come into play in the movies. Guess we’ll just have to wait for Avengers 2.

  • Mike Cassandra

Apparently shoehorn is the word of the day lol. I used it twice before seeing your comment and noticing you did too.

  • Nirali

Yay! Hopefully it’ll have a tie-in with Natasha knowing Bucky as the Winter Soldier during her time in Russia…although I don’t really want any romance. Can there please be zero romance in the movie? I’d also love to see Agent Barton and Agent Coulson in the film. Or is that asking for too much?

  • Anonymous

Nobody even knows what a shoehorn is anymore, lol.

  • Anonymous

A movie with a SHIELD-heavy presence would be a place to use him, but Cap 2 already has way too many characters running around for a solo movie. Black Widow. Falcon. Bucky. Sharon. Maria Hill. This Agent Pierce guy. And that’s not even counting the villains.

At this point it’d just be including him for the sake of including him, and I couldn’t imagine him getting any significant development or screentime. I’m sure they’ll namedrop him at least.

There’s a space reserved on one of my bookshelves in between the Legends-scale Tony and Hulk figures…

  • John Wao

So Black Widow, Sharon Carter, the return of Peggy Carter, AND The Falcon? Okay I’m there (as if I wasn’t already going to be there).

  • Mina

I remember looking at my Grandpa’s shoehorns when I was a kid and being so befuddled by them.

  • Mandy

YESSSSSSSSSS! This pleases me. (& this gives me a tiny itty bitty smidge of hope for an eventual Black Widow movie. Pretty pls Marvel? Even a double team of Widow/Hawkeye spin off would be great. )

  • TKS

Shoehorn? That’s one of those new Pokémon, right?

  • Aeryl

    Don’t forget Batroc the Leaper!

  • Life Lessons

    Hooray!! More Black Widow please!!!!

  • Mike Cassandra

Exactly. They would have to force him into the script just to be like “Hey, remember this guy? He’s still a character”. And then everyone who wanted him to be in the movie would complain that he didn’t get screen time, etc. It’s a better service to the character to just leave him out for now

  • Laura Truxillo

It is stupid, how ridiculously happy I get every time I see the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo in some kind of photographic context (instead of just, y’know, design).

Also, I am all for this. I thought Natasha and Rogers had a great bit of chemistry going in the movie. Much as Rogers and Stark contrast with each other with that whole humble soldier/egotistical diva thing, Rogers and Natasha have a similar vibe, with his earnest idealism versus her tired cynicism. Can’t wait!
