Ghostbusters fans know well that Bill Murray would often express hesitation when approached with reboot and sequel concepts for the franchise, so his agreement to make a cameo in Paul Feig’s upcoming Ghostbusters film came as a pleasant surprise. Why did Bill Murray agree to take part in this specific Ghostbusters project, in contrast to all others? He opened up about his decision in a recent Vulture interview:
I thought about it for a very long time. Like, many, many months. No, that’s not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really … It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didn’t do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part].
They have such a jolly group, and they are going to have great success with this project. I didn’t want to overshadow [them] or anything, and I feel really good about it.
Murray’s tendency to refer to his peers as “girls” does make me a bit eyerolly, but at least he understands the value of aiding this project. After the film’s initial casting announcements, I saw a lot of Ghostbusters fans claim that they wouldn’t consider this to be a “real” Ghostbusters film because Bill Murray wasn’t in it. It sounds like this is Murray’s official answer to those fans’ concerns. Of course, some people will never be happy about the idea of an all-female buster squad, but at least those jerks won’t be able to claim that Murray “disapproves” of this project.
