‘You’re on your own’: Bernie Sanders has a crucial message for broke MAGA fans who think they’re in the billionaire boys’ club

The senator makes a good point.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) didn’t mince words on March 26, 2026, delivering a sharp rebuke to Washington’s spending priorities in a viral X post that quickly grabbed hundreds of thousands of eyeballs. He laid out a stark contrast between domestic needs and military funding, a message that clearly resonated.

“Health care? ‘You’re on your own.’ Housing? ‘Nothing we can do.’ Grocery prices? ‘You’re out of luck.’ $200 billion for another war? ‘No problem!’” Sanders wrote. It’s pretty blunt, and he continued by saying, “Americans—Democrats, Republicans, independents—are SICK AND TIRED of endless wars. We need to invest here at home.” Sanders’ criticism comes on the heels of the Pentagon seeking over $200 billion in supplemental funding for the Iran war.

On the same day, leaders of the House Progressive Caucus announced their opposition to any more war funding. According to The Hill, Chairman Greg Casar (D-Texas) leading the charge, called the $200 billion request an “outrageous” waste of taxpayer dollars. At a press briefing in the Capitol, he said, “We must end this war now. Democrats must unite against this outrageous request. We should join together to block the request and stop the war as best we can.”

Sanders’ views really hit home for a lot of people feeling the pinch

It’s important to note that the Trump administration has also been busy implementing provisions from the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” signed in 2025. This act brought about the largest cuts to safety-net programs in U.S. history, slashing crucial support like Medicaid and food assistance (SNAP). At the same time, it extended trillions in tax cuts that heavily benefit high earners and corporations. It feels like a real slap in the face for everyday folks.

CPC members are making sure everyone knows where they think that $200 billion should go. They’re highlighting programs to expand health care subsidies, cover pre-K education costs, build more affordable housing units, cover school lunches, and even eradicate medical debt. These are all things that directly impact families and communities across the country.

Projections indicate that millions more Americans could lose their health coverage, with rising costs for housing and groceries hitting working families particularly hard. For many Trump supporters in rural and working-class communities, who often face stagnant wages, crushing medical debt, and unaffordable rents, the contrast between war funding and domestic austerity is incredibly stark.

With everything going on, the situation is only going to get worse

Sanders’ message seems squarely aimed at those who backed “America First” but are now seeing billions flowing abroad for military action while their own needs are met with a harsh rhetoric of austerity. Critics on the right were quick to accuse Sanders of hypocrisy, pointing to past Democratic support for Ukraine aid and arguing that government over-regulation is actually what drives up costs for health care, housing, and food.

However, progressives were quick to praise the senator for highlighting these misplaced priorities, especially amid transatlantic tensions at the G7. As the Iran conflict continues and supplemental funding debates loom in Congress, Sanders’ blunt warning resonates with those who feel increasingly left out of the “billionaire boys’ club” that appears to set Washington’s agenda.
