Man uninvites childhood best friend from wedding 1 week before the big day. Then he realizes who was supposed to cater for free: ‘petty’

The free catering got uninvited too,

A woman says her childhood best friend uninvited her from his wedding because his fiancée feared she would cause “drama.” That decision came with an expensive complication. The woman’s parents had planned to cater the wedding for free, and they no longer wanted to provide the gift after their daughter was told not to come.

The woman explained on Reddit’s r/AmItheAsshole that she and the groom, whom she called Ryan, grew up together while their families were also close. Their parents frequently teased them about becoming a couple, and although they never dated, she admitted that she once had feelings for him.

They eventually grew apart after college, with Ryan moving to another state. Their friendship now largely consists of sending each other TikToks, and the woman said she accepted that a romantic relationship between them would never happen.

His fiancée worried she would cause drama

When Ryan became engaged, his wedding was scheduled back in their hometown. The woman’s family offered to cater the food as their wedding gift, an arrangement she said involved no contract.

Then, roughly a week before the ceremony, Ryan called and uninvited her. According to the woman, his fiancée knew about her former feelings for him and was uncomfortable with her attending because she feared she would “do something to cause drama.”

The Reddit poster insisted she’d never interfered with any of Ryan’s relationships, but remained uninvited. After she told her mother what happened, her parents decided they would no longer attend either and withdrew their offer to cater the wedding.

Ryan wasn’t pleased. He allegedly accused his childhood friend of being “petty” for taking back the family’s gift and said the couple didn’t have enough time or money to find replacement catering. He also reportedly argued that the canceled catering proved his fiancée had been right about the woman wanting to ruin their wedding.

The dispute touches on a familiar tension surrounding longtime friendships hitting new boundaries once one gets married. Another woman recently found that her 10-year friendship suddenly came with new boundaries after her married male friend told her they could no longer privately message each other.

Reddit questioned what she was supposed to do instead

Redditors focused on the particularly significant detail that the woman hadn’t withdrawn the catering herself. She had told her mother she’d been uninvited, and her parents made their own decision.

“You didn’t know that would result in catering being pulled and it’s your parents decision to make,” the top commenter wrote. Another questioned how she could realistically have kept the situation secret from her family when they were all supposed to attend the same wedding.

Wedding invitations and money have produced similarly messy combinations elsewhere. One woman recently opted out of her best friend’s wedding after receiving an unexpected $350 Venmo request for a “wedding fee.”

For Ryan and his fiancée, however, the immediate problem seems more practical. Their wedding is only a week away, and according to his childhood friend’s account, the free catering they expected is no longer on the menu.
