Woman says her sister held her daughter first in the delivery room, then came to dinner with her ex: ‘All while secretly wanting my boyfriend’

She states her sister and her ex had feelings for each other for years, and her mother told her to move on.

A woman wants strangers to decide whether she overreacted by shutting her sister out of childcare for her toddler. According to Daily Dot, she put the question to Reddit under the name Mia, giving her sister the name Brianna and her ex the name Jake. By her own account all three names are invented, and she lists her age as 27, her sister’s as 30 and her ex’s as 29.

The trouble began at a recent dinner with relatives, when her sister walked in beside her ex, the father of her daughter, who is 2. The sister then gave a speech about jealousy and other people’s happiness. The woman asked her to explain herself, and the sister acknowledged that she had long held feelings for the ex and he for her.

The woman states her sister hooked up with him in a month he and she had split, then kept talking to him without her knowledge after the couple reunited. She points to her sister’s presence at her baby shower and the birth. “She was at my baby shower, in the delivery room, and held my daughter before I did. All while secretly wanting my boyfriend,” she states.

Mother disagrees with the ban

The sister cried when confronted and told her she wanted to keep her place in her niece’s life. Their mother urged the woman to move on, reasoning that she and her ex were not a couple at the time the two first hooked up. The sister and the ex have since made things official, the post states.

The woman states her sister had always been closely involved with her daughter, from babysitting to buying gifts, and that she had trusted her. The sister continues to expect babysitting duties as though nothing happened. The woman refused until she feels comfortable, and her mother claims she is using the child to get back at her sister out of jealousy.

A later edit to the post addressed the ex’s role. The woman explains he shares custody and has the girl on weekends, and she says the dispute is only about her sister. She also states that coparenting with him has gone well since they broke up for good months earlier, and that she wants him to keep seeing their daughter.

Guidance on ex-partners from Utah State University Extension advises parents to “Establish formal ways of interacting with your ex-partner” and to put agreements in writing. It suggests a mediator or family counselor when civil, child-centered communication is not possible.

Setting limits on family babysitting is not new, as seen when a Redditor refused to babysit his brother’s three kids. How to treat a relative’s partner is the other question, as with a Redditor who refused to normalize cheating.

The outlet states it could not independently verify the claims in the post.
