Woman Married and Moved for the ‘American Dream’, Now She Wants to Leave the US: ‘Not Like What I Thought at All’
A woman's expectations didn't match the reality.
Many people hoped to achieve success and experience the American Dream, but for one woman, that dream shattered when reality came crashing in. On the Reddit community r/whoathatsinteresting, a video shared by u/search_google_com shows a Thai woman detailing her experience living in the United States.
“My Thai wife moved here three years ago, and now she wants to move back to Thailand,” the woman’s husband said at the beginning of the video. The woman claimed that she moved to the United States with the idea of living the American Dream, but the reality was different from what she expected.
“It’s not like what I thought at all. I feel like the American Dream is dead,” the woman claimed. “It’s not like [it was from] 20 or 30 years ago anymore.” She reasoned that the cost of living was getting more expensive, and claimed that it was becoming “impossible to afford anything at all.” The sentiment isn’t a far cry, as even people with multiple jobs are struggling to stay afloat in this economy.
Thai woman claims every day is an endless cycle
“Every day feels like a rat race,” the woman said. She claimed that she spends her days simply going to work, finishing work, and then going home—only for it to repeat all over again the next day. She alleges that the limited transportation is also a major drawback. “In order to go somewhere, you need to drive there. You need to have a car; there’s no public transportation.”
The woman claimed that there’s a stark lifestyle and culture difference between the United States and her homeland. “In Thailand, the lifestyle is more relaxing. It’s more enjoyable to live there,” she claimed. “[The] people are nice [and] there’s a lot of food options everywhere.”
The Thai woman also claimed that the healthcare in Thailand is a lot more affordable compared to its western counterpart. Healthcare in the United States has been a widely discussed issue, with many people having been denied access to treatment. “Overall, I feel happier in Thailand. So that’s the reason why I wanna move back to Thailand,” the woman concluded in the video.
Redditors weighed in on the woman’s observations, with opinions divided. A user shared that a similar conversation was brought up with their spouse, and concluded that there is no perfect place to live in: “We came to the conclusion that while we like Thailand, there are a lot of stressors you get in Thailand [that] you don’t get in the US. A lot of stressors you get in the US that you don’t get in Thailand.”
One user also spoke up about the idea of the US versus the reality, saying “How does she know what it was like 20 or 30 years ago in America?” because the woman in the video appears to be young. Either way, it’s a debate that won’t be solved anytime soon.
