Man Buys Fish and Chips to Try for the First Time, Then Learns a Hard Lesson While Eating It at the Beach

That was unfortunate.

A man just wanted to embark on a culinary experience of fish and chips. Instead, he was left to simply admire the sea, find his meal missing, and perhaps learn a lesson or two about bringing food by the sea. On TikTok, a man named Benito (@benitomottoh_) captured the hilarious, although unfortunate, moment when a flock of seagulls pilfered his unattended fish and chips at Seaford Beach in East Sussex.

In the video, which has since racked up more than 4.3 million views, Benito can be seen seated on Seaford Beach’s pebbles as he seemingly prepares to eat fish and chips for the first time. But before he could take a bite of the battered fried fish, a gust of wind blew away his plastic bag.

Benito appeared to have briefly hesitated before deciding to chase after the plastic bag, adding the text “brain: that’s littering” on-screen, supposedly his justification for setting the fish and chips goodness down. The moment he left the fish and chips unattended, however, one seagull quickly advanced towards the meal and was soon joined by an entire flock.

The fish and chips vanish

When Benito finally returned, the seagulls had already left the crime scene, and the man was left with a visibly empty container and a look of astonishment. Such an incident can be taken as a lesson to never underestimate hungry birds, or to be more aware of the creatures that live in the ocean.

While the loss of Benito’s fish and chips was an unfortunate event for him, viewers were left entertained by the sequence of events captured on camera. “Wtf did that bag go? You was gone for so long,” one comment read. “This is worse then getting jumped,” another said. “Can’t lie that’s on you,” a comment read. “How was that chip?” a user asked, referring to the single fry he ate.

Other comments even jokingly asked if it was his first time going to the beach as well. “Is this your first time going to the beach as well,” a comment read. Burger King UK even joined the fun, saying, “Was it your first time or theirs?” Some were a bit more skeptical of the incident and wondered if the video was staged: “How are you from London and never had fish and chips??”

Seagulls are known to steal food at the beach

In a second video, Benito denied that the incident was an act. “Why on earth would I do that in today’s cost of living?” he said. According to Benito, he had never liked fish when he was growing up, hence why it was his first time trying the famous dish. Benito also admitted that he made an error in choosing the location to eat his meal.

Benito said that despite running after the plastic bag, he wasn’t able to catch it, and claimed he wasn’t able to return quickly to his food because he was stunned by the seagulls. “The reason it took me so long to come back is because I was standing there in disbelief that all these birds just flew straight to my food,” he said.

Seagulls have gained a reputation for being food thieves, and people are often advised to refrain from feeding or leaving food to prevent seagulls from gathering in public spaces. Per the Dorset Council, seagulls tend to dive down to steal food directly from people at beaches, and their behavior can become more aggressive during breeding season; hence why they recommend eating indoors instead.

While Benito wasn’t able to get a taste of fish and chips, the incident will probably remain memorable for him. “I’ve learnt my lesson, and I will not be leaving my food unattended at the beach. Nor will I even probably be going to the beach,” he said.
