It’s a tricky and ambitious endeavor to start a sequel before fans have even seen the first, but it’s not a very very surprising path for teenage superhero Spider-Man. We’ve known that Tom Holland had signed up to play Spidey for three solo movies and three Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances for a while, and it’s pretty on brand for the Spider-Man movies as a whole.
THR announced today that Sony has set Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 for a July 5, 2019 release date. I’m a bit puzzled that it’s being referred to as Homecoming 2 since it seems like there should be a new title (Spider-Man: Prom?), but that’s probably more for the sake of keeping plot details under wraps. After all, there’s a wide array of villains the franchise can choose from, even if you’re avoiding a repeat from previous adaptations.
The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer that dropped yesterday looked amazing, so I’m all for seeing more of Holland as Spider-Man in the next few years. It’s likely he’ll also be making an appearance in the Avengers film set for a May 3, 2019 release. Are you excited for more Spider-Man?
