We have the need for speed but Tom Cruise said to have patience for ‘Top Gun 3’

Tom Cruise as Maverick in Top Gun: Maverick

I have been waiting for news on a third Top Gun movie for a minute. Glen Powell keeps hinting that it is coming, we’ve heard that it is of interest, and yet there is no concrete news. Tom Cruise, however, told us all to be patient.

Cruise is known as “Mr. Movies” for a reason. He’s a champion of the art form, he wants to keep theaters alive, and films like Top Gun: Maverick helped to revitalize the moving going experience after the COVID-19 pandemic. The point here being that he’s always trying to bring us the best movie he possibly can so we can go to theaters and enjoy the experience. Meaning he’s not about to rush a Top Gun sequel just because we want to be back with our favorite aviators.

During an interview with an Australian talk show, Cruise addressed the possibility of a third Top Gun movie. “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to, you know, figure out Top Gun: Maverick with things,” he jokes. “But, so, all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”

He went on to make it clear that he has a lot of movies always in the work. “And, you know, there’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, and we’ll be coming out with that. That was, you know, an extraordinary experience. And [Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.”

So that’s good news in theory. We know that it is “happening.” The question is just when.

Okay but I need my team back

To be fair, as much as I love Ethan Hunt and the Mission: Impossible franchise, my heart will always be with the Top Gun movies. My journey through Cruise’s filmography has been complicated. I wasn’t the biggest fan of him in the mid-00s as a young teenager but I grew to love and appreciate the work he puts forth to keep cinemas alive. It made me have a new appreciation for his movies and love what Cruise does as an actor.

But I have always loved the original Top Gun movie and then Maverick consumed me so completely. I loved getting to meet Rooster (Miles Teller) and see how Maverick handles his best friend’s son. Getting to see Hangman (Powell) take on the energy that Ice (Val Kilmer) brought in the original? Life changing. We all love Bob (Lewis Pullman) and I loved getting to see how Phoenix (Monica Barbaro) deals with the men of Top Gun.

It brought movies back. I saw it in 4DX and loved it and I just want to see what Cruise and company would bring us with a sequel and so I will be patient, Mr. Movies. But please don’t take too long, I miss my aviators.
