We Have a Need for Speed (And the Re-Release of This Iconic Tom Cruise Franchise)

Is there anybody more box office than Tom Cruise?
There are few more reliable draws to big screen events than the ageless superstar, who continues to put in phenomenal action film performances well into his sixties. The couch-jumping actor also still does many of his own incredibly dangerous stunts.
If you needed any more proof to hammer home how well the Mission Impossible star is ageing, 2026 marks 40 years since the release of Top Gun, which gave him one of his most iconic roles. And, to celebrate, this summer Top Gun and its much more recent sequel Top Gun: Maverick will be returning to theatres across the world.
In Cruise’s home market of America there will be a week of opportunities to see the two films in the large screen, high definition, amazing audio system setting that they deserve, with both movies running in theatres across May 13 to 19. Globally there is a bit more variability in events to celebrate. For example, in the UK, there will be special screenings on the 40th anniversary of the actual UK release of the first film (May 18th), but not across a longer time period.
The anniversary couldn’t have come at a better time for the franchise about fighter pilots, with the third film in the series recently confirmed to be in the works. That bombshell was dropped last week at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and as per the Guardian Cruise is also set to return as Peter “Maverick” Mitchell. There is very little else out there about the latest installment, but there’s no doubt the budgets will be big, and the box office receipts even bigger.
While Cruise remains somewhat controversial due to his close links to Scientology, his magnetism and talent remains palpable, and many will be glad to see him returning to his role as Maverick. Let’s just hope the latest sequel doesn’t crash.
