Photographer Rob Kroenert took this stunning photo of Horsetail Falls, a seasonal waterfall that appears in El Dorado National Forest, near Lake Tahoe.

Even though Horsetail Falls can only be seen in the late winter and early spring, it makes up for its seasonality with a stunning, unusual visual effect: in February, at sundown, when the sky is clear, it takes on a golden, lavalike glow that makes it look almost like an erupting volcano. Naturally, it’s a destination for photographers; we can only hope Sauron and/or Shadow Man haven’t discovered it yet.
