Based on online reports from people who do their grocery shopping online, one of the scariest notifications to get after placing an order is finding out that a man has been assigned to shop for it.

In fact, this has become something of a trope online. Many shoppers, mostly women, have shared their frustrating experiences whenever they get a male Instacart or delivery shopper.

One woman, for example, said she received baby formula still locked inside its anti-theft box, along with the Walmart shopping basket. Another said her male delivery driver claimed there were no tampons in the entire store.

A third woman went to the store she ordered groceries from, only to find all the items her male shopper had marked out of stock.

Now, another woman has shared her “male shopper” story after placing an order through Walmart+. In her video, which got over 891,000 views, TikTok creator @thatgirllllexus shares a screen recording of her Walmart cart.

“The moment Walmart delivery gives your order to a man,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay.

On the “Order Updates” page in the Walmart app, she shows three substituted items. Then, she shows eight unavailable ones, including garlic paste, chicken nuggets, smoked sausage, chicken fillets, shredded cheese, and more.

Commenters Were Not Surprised

In the comments section, viewers said this is exactly why they get nervous when a male shopper takes their order.

“Like half of the store is out of stock, really!?” one user wrote.

Others said they’ve had to practically guide male shoppers through the store themselves.

“I had to give a guy whole store directs on some ‘turn left near the deli’ ‘turn right near the frozen organic,’” another wrote.

A third commenter, who said they work as a Spark driver, pointed out that the app already gives shoppers plenty of help finding items.

“You know what’s crazy? As a spark driver when you shop for groceries there is a map of the store on your phone and a little black dot indicating where you’re standing and moving,” they wrote. “It literally draws a line for you to follow to go to that exact items.”

What Happens if Your Walmart+ Order Goes Wrong?

Unfortunately, there’s no way customers can find out if an item is really out of stock. The only way to find out would be to physically check the store, but this defeats the purpose of ordering online in the first place.

For substitutions, Walmart says customers can accept, decline, or return substituted items. If an item is out of stock, the shopper may offer a similar item.

Customers can also manage substitutions before the order is fulfilled. Walmart says shoppers can choose items they don’t want substituted or select preferred backup items during checkout. If the original item is out of stock and the customer has said they don’t want a substitution, Walmart says it will remove the item from the order.

If you get the order and are unhappy with what you received, you can always rate the delivery and contact Walmart through the “Chat with us” option in the app.
