Couple orders gender reveal cake from Walmart. Then they bite into it—and realize the baker played them big time
While gender reveal events tend to be elaborate, extravagant celebrations that at times have even caused environmental disasters, they can also be an intimate moment shared only by the couple.
For one such couple who ordered their gender reveal cake from Walmart, however, the moment may have been spoiled by the decorator.
In a video posted by creator Makayla Jaime (@makaylajaime), which went viral with over 3.6 million views, the couple shows the Walmart cake they ordered for the reveal.
What Went Wrong With the Walmart Gender Reveal Cake?
“It’s a boy!” Makayla’s husband says off-screen.
“How do you know?” she asks.
“‘Cause there’s a blue dot right here,” he says, pointing to a small piece of blue icing.
The cake is heart-shaped, with the inscription “Baby #3” written in black icing. It’s got white icing on the outside, except for a small blue dot that appears to give the sex away.
The way it’s supposed to work is that the couple cuts into the cake, and if the icing inside is blue, it’s a boy. If it’s pink, it’s a girl.
“They probably made a mistake,” the husband says, laughing. “Just screwed us.”
“I guess there’s only one way to find out,” Makayla says.
Her husband keeps digging for more clues. “Even the cup says B,” he points out, referring to the cups they were about to use to scoop up the cake.
“Walmart did give us away the gender,” Makayla says.
However, when they dig into the cake, to their surprise and delight, the icing is pink.
“My husband said @Walmart count your days,” the creator added in the caption.
Commenters Are Entertained
“The Walmart cake decorator watching this like….. Gotcha,” one user quipped.
“I’ve seen some bakers do that on purpose to fool you lol,” shared another.
“Im a cake decorator and one time I smeared blue frosting in my apron because I only had pink on it and I didn’t want to give it away,” wrote a third. “I had pink on my shirt so I couldn’t just replace the apron”
Another Walmart customer shared her experience. “I told ours to put blue filling inside ( I knew the gender we were surprising our family) it had plain white filling,” they shared. “Thank god we had a back up plan.”
Does Walmart Do Gender Reveal Cakes?
There doesn’t appear to be an “official” service for Walmart bakery gender reveal cakes. However, most cakes on the site are customizable, meaning customers can choose the color or type of frosting and the inscription they’d like on top.
Most likely, the person placing the order would have to be aware of the sex, as they would have to select the color beforehand.
From photos and videos of what customers are calling the “Walmart Gender Reveal Cake,” it actually appears to be the White Lambeth Classic Heart Cake, with customizations to make it fit the theme.
