Vogue Germany Featured This New York City Woman’s Wedding Dress. But it Had One Slip-Up: ‘This is Not the Look I Was Going For.’

A bride’s dress is the center of discussion during a wedding. Friends and family often hold their breath before the bride walks down the aisle. Jelena Weir (@jelena.nyc) walked out with an exciting wedding dress that caught the attention of Vogue Germany. But she recalled that as she was strolling by friends and family with her husband in tow, her dress made a last-minute slip-up that guests couldn’t ignore.
“I know my dress is not for everyone. It might be a little too revealing for some, but honestly, I would rather have a dress that’s polarizing rather than one that pleases everyone but is very forgettable,” Weir told TikTok. She wore a backless halter dress with a partial cape designed by Dana Harel. A chain string held up the top part of the dress, keeping it snug against her torso.
An hour after she had put the dress on, nothing seemed amiss. Because the dress was backless and the front had less fabric, Weir had to be cautious. She had only found her dress a month before the wedding. Because they lacked time, Weir said that the dress was not tailored to her measurements, but she fell in love with it. Weir figured that with fashion tape and her sticky bra, she could make the dress work out.
She thought her wedding dress would make it
“What I did not put in consideration, though, was the fact that I have a toddler that I will be juggling around—bending downwards, picking him up—and that was a lot of tension on the dress.” At the time, she was also breastfeeding her son. She would have had to take the top part of the dress off multiple times throughout the day. With the added strain of chasing her son and picking him up, the chain string eventually broke loose from the silk part of the dress.
“It was 35°C hot, though, which is probably 94°F, so I was constantly slightly sweaty,” Weir said. Because of the heat and sweat, her sticky bra kept slipping. She also had to replace her fashion tape throughout the day because she was breastfeeding.
Brides aren’t the only ones whose outfits are closely scrutinized at a wedding, as this mother-in-law who broke the dress code discovered.
Weir’s dress eventually gave out moments before arriving at the reception venue. Her friends helped her out by pulling it upwards by the cape. They then stuck fashion tape to the dress to hold it in place.
“I need to survive another fifteen minutes, and I will have a dress change,” Weir said. She had a different dress for the reception, but still wanted to walk in with her beautiful designer wedding dress.
As Weir walked beside her husband they were greeted by their friends and family, who were supportively cheering them on in the reception area. They kissed and even danced around a bit in front of the crowd, until Weir finally noticed something strange about her dress.
“Obviously, this was not the look I was going for.” Her dress gave up on holding itself up. In the clip, it partially exposed one side of Weir’s chest to her guests. As she moved around, the dress exposed more of her chest. Weir accidentally flashed her guests.
“The silk was beautiful, but it was heavy, so it was pulling the dress down. The sticky tape did nothing to it,” Weir said. Thankfully, she had a separate reception dress ready for the occasion. At least only Weir’s closest circles witnessed the blooper, unlike this woman who ended up flashing strangers in the city all because she chose to wear a white summer dress.
