UNC Chapel Hill Response Questioned After Man Allegedly Breaks Into ‘Love Island’ Watch Party, Shouts Racist Slurs, Hurls Objects

Students at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill are questioning the university’s response after a man unaffiliated with the school entered a campus building. It happened during a Black student organization’s Love Island watch party. Once there, reports say he shouted racial slurs and caused attendees to fear he might have a weapon.

UNC Police responded to the incident at about 9:21 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Greenlaw Hall, according to the university and local reports. Police later took 45-year-old Keegan Carlisle Wilson into custody. UNC said Wilson was taken to a hospital after officers observed signs of mental distress.

The gathering centered on the Season 8 reunion of Love Island and included members of several Black student organizations. According to students who spoke with WRAL and ABC11, Wilson entered the room, threw objects, and sprayed a substance from an aerosol can. Students said his actions and movements led some of them to believe he might have a gun.

How Wilson Gained Access is Unclear.

UNC said the building was locked as of 7 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2026, but officials have not determined how Wilson gained access. The university also said police did not issue an Alert Carolina notification because officers had apprehended Wilson. Afterward, they determined there was no ongoing threat to campus safety.

Some students have questioned that decision. UNC student Makhi Nash told WRAL that students felt threatened inside the room and that Wilson remained elsewhere on campus after leaving the gathering. Another student, Ifeoluwatobi Onasanya, said students need an actionable plan for responding to similar incidents. Student Nikhil Uchil told ABC11 that he first learned about the incident through Yik Yak, a social media app, with no official word from the school.

First-year student Zion Jones said students dropped to the floor because they thought he might be pulling out a gun. She later realized he appeared to have an aerosol can and a lighter.

Other students described scrambling for cover or fleeing the building. ABC11 reported that some students hid under desks, while others left the room as the situation unfolded. Video recorded elsewhere on campus also appeared to show Wilson confronting people outside the building.

Social Media Creators Are Responding.

The concerns also spread online. In a TikTok post, creator GuGu Nicole described hearing about the incident from students and on social media, and said the experience left Black students feeling frightened and unsupported. Her account paraphrased students’ descriptions of property being damaged, people being pushed or followed, and Wilson entering the watch party, where she said he continued throwing objects and shouting racist remarks.

She argued that UNC cannot prevent every person from entering campus, but said students should receive timely information and support when an incident involving racial harassment occurs. She also rejected the idea that Black students should attend historically Black colleges and universities instead of predominantly white institutions, saying students should be able to choose where they receive their education without sacrificing their sense of safety.

UNC has said it is providing support to affected students and has connected university offices with students and student organization leaders. Senior Vice Provost for Student Success James Orr also described the incident as “frightening and unacceptable” in a message to the campus community.

Wilson is expected to face charges including disorderly conduct, vandalism, damage to property, and aggravated assault once he is medically cleared, according to UNC. He is also expected to be trespassed from campus. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether additional hate-crime charges are appropriate.
