After the success of their creepy ghost saga The Haunting of Hill House, Netflix is expanding their slate of supernatural horror series. Their latest series, Chambers, stars Uma Thurman and Tony Goldwyn (Scandal) as a mysterious couple who lose their daughter and form an unhealthy attachment to the recipient of her heart donation, a young woman named Sasha (newcomer Sivan Alyra Rose).
The synopsis reads: “A young heart attack survivor becomes consumed by the mystery surrounding the heart that saved her life. However, the closer she gets to uncovering the truth about her donor’s sudden death, the more she starts taking on the characteristics of the deceased — some of which are troublingly sinister.”
The series was created by writer/actor Leah Rachel, who described the series as “Taking place in a mystic, New Age pocket of Arizona, Chambers is a psychological horror story that explores the different ways we metabolize trauma. But what starts out as a grounded human story eventually pivots into something far more strange and fucked up than you were expecting.”
Possessed or cursed organ donations is well-trod territory. We’ve seen it in everything from 1991’s Body Parts to the 2008 Jessica Alba film The Eye. The trailer feels similarly uninspired, and surprisingly low-rent. I know that not every Netflix series can have the visual style and mood of The Haunting, but there is little to distinguish this trailer from most run of the mill horror films.
Also … why is Uma Thurman on this show? She should be headlining a prestige drama, not playing a creepy mom in a YA horror show. I feel like Thurman deserves better, especially in light of all the abuse she suffered on the set of Kill Bill. I just want her to have good things.
But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe this series will be amazing and surprise us. I’ll reserve judgement until I actually see the show. Does Chambers look appealing to you? What horror tropes or stories would you like to see adapted to a series?
