Steven Spielberg Is Back (And Maybe Better Than Ever) With These ‘Disclosure Day’ First Reactions

Emily Blunt on Disclosure Day

What if the government is hiding more secrets than what humanity is ready for? And if aliens are real, how would humanity come to terms with their existence? These are the central questions of Disclosure Day, the upcoming movie by Steven Spielberg.

Social media has been entirely stoked by Spielberg’s comeback. It has been 4 years since the director’s last film, The Fabelmans, so people are eagerly waiting for the release of his next film. Moreover, this would be the first alien movie Spielberg has made since War of the Worlds (2005). If there’s anything this director knows best, it’s how to make classic alien films.

Online reactions to Disclosure Day

First reactions to the film on X have fans even more pumped for the latest project. There are already many who think that 2026 is a “generational” year for films.

One popular tweet summed the sentiment up. They wrote, “The director of E.T. believes the things in the sky are not extraterrestrials. They are humanity’s future selves, sent back to study the exact century we are living through because they know something is about to happen that we have not noticed. Disclosure Day is not a film about whether aliens are real. It is a film about the contents of the warning.”

Of course, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Some culture warriors are already whining about the Spielberg movie being “woke.” But this is a minority opinion, and others have more enthusiasm to see the film.

But these are all sentiments from people who haven’t seen the film just yet. For those who sat through screening, how did they feel about the upcoming movie?

Spielberg’s best alien film to date

“A dense roller coaster ride blending chase film, love story, & mystery, all wrapped in sci-fi wonder. It’s Spielberg’s best film in 20 years,” said Germain Lussier from Gizmodo. He also included high praise for lead actress Emily Blunt.

“Steven Spielberg is all-in on engaging mystery and some astounding bits of camera work,” Brandon Davis commented regarding the movie. He added, “Emily Blunt is exhaustingly good; Colman Domingo stands out.”

“There are at least six shots in DISCLOSURE DAY where I have no idea how Steven Spielberg actually did it. It’s an X-Files mystery with winks at every film in Spielberg’s history and an earnestness that I hope people embrace,” Erik Voss from New Rockstars wrote. Like the other critics, he absolutely adored Emily Blunt’s acting. He’s of the opinion that Blunt’s performance in Disclosure Day is “the best performance of her career.”

“Disclosure Day is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! Truly something special. I was hanging onto every word, captivated by the story as it all played out,” said Tessa Smith, a critic from Rotten Tomatoes.

“Steven Spielberg yet again reminding us that aliens are out there in an iconic mix of both Close Encounters and E.T. Surprisingly funny, poignant, and thrilling to watch in that special Spielberg way,” Rachel Leishman of The Mary Sue wrote in her reaction. If there’s anything Spielberg excels at, it’s movies about aliens.

Outside of a few whiny comments about leads, everyone else is excited for the film to come out. Those who’ve already seen it were mesmerized by the cast’s acting prowess and Spielberg’s masterful directing. With that, it’s clear Disclosure Day is a must-watch as soon as it hits the theaters on June 12.
