Trump just resurrected a monument toppled by a mob and the defiant warning he issued is tearing the country apart
A completely on-brand move.

President Donald Trump has placed a statue of the explorer Christopher Columbus near the White House, a move that’s definitely stirring up a lot of conversation. This isn’t just any statue; it’s a replica of one that was famously torn down and tossed into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor by protesters back in 2020, according to The Hill. Now, it’s found a new home on the north side of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House campus.
This particular statue’s placement has been a hot topic since reports surfaced last month that the administration was looking to erect it on White House grounds. The Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations, or COPOMIAO, announced in a Sunday press release that the statue “now stands on the White House grounds in celebration of Italian American history and culture.” They see this as a significant moment for their community.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle echoed that sentiment, stating that “the White House is proud to honor Christopher Columbus’s legendary life and legacy with a well-deserved statue on the White House grounds.” Ingle also quoted Trump, who has “rightly hailed Christopher Columbus as ‘the original American hero, a giant of Western civilization, and one of the most gallant and visionary men to ever walk the face of the earth.’”
Trump seems to be actively working to reverse what he sees as a cultural shift
The message from the White House is pretty straightforward: “In this White House, Christopher Columbus is a hero, and President Trump will ensure he’s honored as such for generations to come.” Of course, Columbus’s legacy is far from universally celebrated.
While many in the Italian American community view him as an iconic figure, others critically examine his impact. His arrival in the Americas undeniably kicked off centuries of European colonialism and led to the harsh treatment of Indigenous people across the continent. This dual perspective is why discussions around Columbus are often so charged.
Trump has been quite vocal about his stance on Columbus. Just last year, he signed a proclamation that effectively “brought back” Columbus Day. This happened after President Biden had, for the first time, officially acknowledged Indigenous Peoples Day with a proclamation. It seems Trump is actively working to reverse what he sees as a cultural shift.
He even took to social media some time ago, expressing his frustration with the removal of such statues. “They tore down his Statues, and put up nothing but ‘WOKE,’ or even worse, nothing at all!” Trump wrote. He then issued a promise: “Well, you’ll be happy to know, Christopher is going to make a major comeback. I am hereby reinstating Columbus Day under the same rules, dates, and locations, as it has had for all of the many decades before!”
