Tom Hardy, who previously portrayed Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, is joining the Marvel Universe as a different supervillain with weird stuff on his face. The actor will portray Eddie Brock in a Venom movie, which is a great move on the part of Sony to get people interested in a Venom movie.

The Venom solo-movie (which Sony emphasizes is “not a spinoff but hte first movie after Spider-Man from its Marvel Universe of characters”) follows the supervillain as he goes from being “bent on destroying Spider-Man” to turning into “kind of an anti-hero.” Brock is “able to converse and have a relationship with the symbiote” in the film, but there’s no news yet about what other heroes or villains will make an appearance. Directing is Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer, which makes me hopeful for a mixture of dark comedy and story.  This definitely goes in the opposite approach Spider-Man 3 took with casting Topher Grace, so I’m curious to see what direction the film will take.

The Venom movie will begin production this fall and is set for release October 5th, 2018. Hardy “has been a huge fan of Venom,” and seems thrilled for the role. Thoughts?
