Those ‘The Batman: Part 2’ fan theories might just be right if newly released set photos are any indication
Well, well, looks like fans might have been right all along.
The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, followed Batman as he investigated hidden corruption in Gotham after a serial killer started killing off important political figures in the city. It netted over $772 million worldwide, making it a hit.
Filming for The Batman: Part 2 is now underway in London, and new behind-the-scenes photos and videos have recently been released. Most of the released footage focuses on a protest scene, but it contains clues that suggest certain long-held fan theories might just be correct.
The long-standing fan theories about the new villains appearing in ‘The Batman: Part 2‘
A year ago, director Matt Reeves mentioned in a red carpet interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, when talking about the main villain in The Batman: Part 2 (which is slated for 2028), “I will say it’s never really been done in a movie before.”
The statement narrowed the field a bit as to who the potential villains could be and immediately sparked fan theories. One of those theories involved the Court of Owls, a secret society of Gotham’s most influential and wealthiest families, which also has ties to Bruce Wayne’s family. As Reeves stated that he’d done a deep dive into the Batman lore, it made them a significant possibility, and one that became a favorite among fans.
Another potential player who came up in fan discussion was Anarky. As the name suggests, the character (whose real name is Lonnie Machin) strongly believes in overthrowing established institutions that have been corrupted. Although this character appeared on the CW’s Arrow and in Batman: Arkham Origins, he has never been on the big screen, so fans believed he might be the villain of The Batman: Part 2.
Surprisingly, the newly released footage might back both theories
In the footage of the protest scene, Bruce Wayne is making his way through the crowd while surrounded by Gotham police. As he does so, eagle-eyed fans noticed that several of the signs the protesters are holding include slogans such as “Eat the Rich,” “Court of Oligarchs,” and “Court of Fools.” That repeated use of the word “court” on the signs has fans once again theorizing that the Court of Owls will indeed be involved in this film.
It would make sense, after all, since the first film wasn’t only about Bruce Wayne investigating corruption but also exploring his family’s possible role in it. Bringing in the Court of Owls would allow the second film to build on the themes of the first, as Bruce Wayne struggles to determine what he owes Gotham as a Wayne, not as Batman.
As for Anarky, one photo shows a character dressed in a jacket with an anarchy symbol and a white mask, and looking very similar to Lonnie Machin’s alter ego. If indeed it is, he would be pitted directly against the wealthy elite, including Bruce Wayne and the Court of Owls.
Of course, it may all mean nothing, but the hints offered up by this footage are tantalizing, to say the least. It’s also likely to serve up brand-new fan theories about The Batman: Part 2.
