‘The Studio’ was on to something after this Bill Hader news

Bill Hader as Barry Berkman in Barry

On the Apple TV+ series The Studio, Matt (Seth Rogen) tries to make a movie about Kool-Aid. His artistic take on it is…a choice and ultimately he ends up making a Barbie inspired version. But his original idea, brought to him from Martin Scorsese, fascinated me.

In an exclusive to Variety, it was revealed that Bill Hader Daniel Zelman are developing a series about Jim Jones. Aka, the man behind why we have the phrase “drink the Kool-Aid.” The Jonestown story is also what Martin Scorsese was pitching a movie on to Rogen’s Matt in The Studio so what did the series know?

The event included The Peoples Temple Agricultural Project and Hader is potentially going to star as Jim Jones, the cult leader. Jones encouraged his followers to take part in a “revolutionary suicide” that included 909 members of his cult drinking Kool-Aid spike with cyanide. Rumor is that Hader will direct, star, and co-write the series with Zelman.

As Variety points out, Steve Buscemi and Martin Scorsese are not attached to this version. Buscemi was playing Jones in the fictional version of the Jonestown story in The Studio and the film was called Kool-Aid to try to make Matt’s bosses happy with the project. It’d be funny though if Busemi played a role in this series. Maybe he can play Leo Ryan, who Jones had killed!

While this is a funny coincidence, it is fascinating. The minute Scorsese explained his idea for a Jonestown movie, I wish we could see a story on what Jim Jones and the people of Jonestown in Guyana did. This isn’t going to be a Scorsese movie but Hader’s take on it will be interesting to see. After his work in Barry and the darker parts of playing that hit man, I do think that he’d do a great job with Jim Jones.

Until we know more, at least we know that The Studio was definitely on to something.
