It’s the end of an era. Star Wars: The Force Awakens had its final show in the theater (at least until it inevitably returns to the big screen before Episode IX) on May 30th, capping a lucrative 168-day run.
Although some fans have owned their own copy of the movie for months now, The Force Awakens‘ final few days in theaters was not too shabby; Uproxx points out that it was one of the 50 highest-grossing movies that week. On its last day, The Force Awakens aired in 20 theaters and raked in $1,450.
During its five and a half months in theaters, The Force Awakens flew past record after box-office record, enjoying a record-grossing worldwide opening weekend and single weekend gross and earning $1 billion globally faster than any other previous film. The movie’s total domestic box office earnings came in at $936,662,225. You can buy a lot of bread from Unkar Plutt with that.
Given how long The Force Awakens was in theaters, it’s a little bittersweet to see it go—I own a copy, but nothing really matches the experience of sitting in an air-conditioned room with other nerdy strangers still delighting in what the movie has to offer. Of course, it won’t be long before we have an entirely new Star Wars movie in theaters! Only five and a half months-ish until Rogue One gets here. What the heck am I going to do in the meantime?
