“The Bat Is Dead,” According to Supes in Batman v Superman

Recommended Videos

Remember when Batman asked Superman in the first Batman v Superman teaser, “Do you bleed?” Now we have an idea of the conversation that led up to that moment, thanks to a new clip. It kicks off with Superman ripping the door off the Batmobile, to Batman’s shock. Then Superman tells him to stop responding to the bat signal, because “The Bat is dead.”

In context, this seems less like a threat and more like Superman giving Batman a “you should be ashamed of yourself” speech. In response, though, Batman issues an unquestionable threat: “Do you bleed? You will.”

If not for all the superhero posturing, brooding, and grunting, this insult trade-off might feel more like a playground brawl (“sticks and stones–” “shut up” “no you shut up”). It’s Batman and Superman, though, so the consequences will go way beyond insults.

We’ve seen how much wanton death and destruction this version of Superman could pull off in Man of Steel — so many innocent bystanders! — hence, it always made sense to me that people would be terrified of him in this universe. From that angle, Batman seems like he’s in the right, but we don’t know much about Affleck’s version of Batman. So far, he doesn’t seem entirely reasonable either.

Both men seem like they’re acting out of emotion rather than a sense of responsibility for how their powers and choices affect the people around them. I assume that’s why Wonder Woman is going to step in and give them both a reality check? … Please???

EDIT: If you like Henry Cavill’s withering glare as much as I did in this clip, please enjoy this .gif and .jpg that I have created as a gift for everyone.
