If you’ve been on Twitter in the last couple of days, you may have noticed a new art trend that involves the characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. One by one, the cast has been illustrated going into different stores at the mall (or outside of it) with a follow-up picture showing what they bought.

I first saw the meme via this post from an artist named Ama. The post reads “Shadow the Hedgehog walking into Claire’s” with an illustration of Shadow, well, walking into Claire’s. Is he looking for that damn fourth Chaos Emerald or looking to accessorize with his black and red color scheme? Listen, the answer can be both.
Ama follows up the post by asking their followers what Shadow would buy, leading to a lot of delightful follow-up answers that range from nail polish to pierces. LOTS of piercings. Because if anyone in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe is gonna get something pierced, it’s Shadow.

Ama later revealed Shadow’s new Claire’s-inspired look, complete with heart-shaped sunglasses and plenty of rainbow jewelry. I’m pretty sure that’s a Claire’s Club Rainbow Heart Bracelet I spot – currently on sale, so Shadow got it at a good price. I also spot a backpack of some sort, could it be an ita bag with Chaos Emerald enamel pins? My headcanon says yes.
This inspired other artists to partake in the meme. With Shadow going to Claire’s, it only made sense for Sonic to go in the opposite direction.

As Ama’s tweet took off, some fans remembered a post that was made back in 2019 from the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account. The post included Robotnik, Sonic, Shadow, and Tails answering questions from fans to go along with the release of Team Sonic Racing – think Mario Kart with Sonic characters. The question came from Twitter user @/smoov22_sonic who asked where Shadow liked to shop.
Sonic guessed Hot Topic, or rather, “Lukewarm Topic,” the place that sells all the edgy clothing. Robotnik guessed “the Halloween store down the street” which I’m going to assume is Spirit Halloween (or maybe an off-shoot name like Ghoulish October). Shadow revealed that he does his shopping at a local convenience store called Maria’s. Robotnik, Shadow, and Tails collectively feel the mood shift into a more somber one as Maria is a bit of a… um… sensitive subject in Shadow’s backstory.
The meme that grew from Ama’s post isn’t as bleak, though, then again it’s not like I’ve seen every post made. I’m sure someone has the characters walking into a place that makes you go “… oh.” I, however, choose to embrace a certain doctor going into Micro Center.
